Background of the Study
Indigenous healing practices in Uyo have long been an essential component of the local healthcare system, drawing on centuries-old knowledge of medicinal herbs, spiritual healing, and holistic wellness (Ibekwe, 2023). These practices, deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of the community, have traditionally addressed both physical and spiritual ailments. However, modern healthcare, characterized by advanced medical technology and evidence-based practices, has increasingly become the dominant model (Aniebue, 2024). This shift has raised questions about the continued relevance and efficacy of indigenous healing methods. While some community members advocate for the integration of traditional and modern practices to provide comprehensive healthcare, others fear that indigenous knowledge may be lost amid rapid technological advancements (Okoro, 2025). The study investigates the current status of indigenous healing in Uyo, evaluating its relevance, challenges, and potential contributions to modern healthcare. By engaging with traditional healers, patients, and medical professionals, the research aims to bridge the gap between conventional and indigenous medical systems, ensuring that valuable cultural practices are preserved and appropriately integrated (Eke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Modern healthcare systems in Uyo are increasingly sidelining indigenous healing practices, which risks the loss of valuable traditional medical knowledge (Aniebue, 2023). This marginalization raises concerns about the cultural sustainability of indigenous medicine and the potential benefits of integrating traditional healing with modern practices. The study seeks to identify the challenges facing indigenous healing and to explore how these practices can complement contemporary healthcare systems (Ibekwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To evaluate the relevance of indigenous healing practices in modern healthcare.
2. To document the challenges faced by traditional healers.
3. To propose models for integrating indigenous and modern healthcare systems.
Research Questions:
1. How relevant are indigenous healing practices in Uyo’s modern healthcare?
2. What challenges impede the practice of traditional healing?
3. How can indigenous healing be integrated with modern healthcare?
Research Hypotheses:
1. H1: Indigenous healing practices positively contribute to community health.
2. H2: Modern healthcare marginalizes traditional healing methods.
3. H3: Integrative healthcare models can improve patient outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the integration of indigenous healing practices with modern healthcare, offering insights that can enhance patient care and preserve cultural heritage. Its findings will benefit healthcare providers, traditional healers, and policymakers in developing inclusive health systems (Okoro, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the relevance of indigenous healing practices within modern healthcare in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, focusing solely on local indigenous medical practices.
Definitions of Terms:
• Indigenous Healing: Traditional medicinal practices based on local knowledge and spirituality.
• Modern Healthcare: Contemporary medical practices based on scientific research and technology.
• Integrative Healthcare: The combination of traditional and modern medical approaches
